Thiruvananthapuram:
Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala.The city gets its name from
the word, Thiruvananthapuram, meaning the city of Anantha or the abode of the sacred Serpent Anantha on which Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the Hindu trinity and derived its name from the Sri Padmanabha Swami Temple. The 'Anantha Puri' became the name Thiruvanathapuram.Trivandrum, the southern tip of kerala is one of the top most centers of tourist attractions. Trivandrum is a place of great historical importance. At early times kings and rulers ruled the center and still now, the royal family exists here. There are many palaces in and around the city like the Kowadiar Palace and Padmanabhapuram Palace. Thiruvananthapuram was the capital of the Travancore Raja's since 1949. It became the capital of Kerala in 1956.In addition, the University of Kerala is situated here.
Sri. Padmanabha swami Temple : Situated near KSRTC bus stand at east Fort.
The presiding diety is Mahavishnu reclining on the serpent ' Anantha'. The architectural work in this temple is famous. The 'Ottakkalmandapam' is a special attraction. The rulers of Travancore were called by the name 'Padmanabhadasan'.
Attukal Bhagavathi Temple : Situated 2 km. away from the city. 'Pogala' (a form of porridge) , is the favourite offering to the Goddess Bhagavathi. The famous 'Pongala' festival celebrated during the Malayalam month ' Kumbha' ( Feb - March ) .
Zoo : One of the main zoos in Asia. situated in Palayam and Vellayambalam. There is a vast collection of rate plants and very old trees in the premises. Working hours 09.00 am to 05.00 pm. Monday Holiday.
Government Art Museum :
Situated near the Zoo. A rich collection of rare and old things such as jewels, coins, sculptures etc. are exhibited here. There are many foreign peoples and historic students visiting this Museum to gather information and to study the ancient culture.
Sree Chithra Art Gallery : Situated near zoo. Painting of famous artists like Raja Ravivarma , Rorich, K.C.S. Panickar etc. are seen here. There is also a grand collection of paintings from China , Japan, Tibet , Bali etc. and copies of the pictures on the Ajantha Caves.
Kawdiar Palace :Sree Chithra Thirunal the last King of t Travancre lived here. He is buried in the beautiful Garden of this palace. The entrance of the palace of historical importance is restricted.
Science and Technology Museum.:
Located in the PMG office Information about the latest studies and inventions in the field of Science and Technology are available here.This place is very useful for children and elders. Near the side of the Science and Tmuseum, situated the Priyadarshini Planetarium. We get enough knowledge of about the Solar system. Watching the orbiting o planets and stars on a domed ceiling through projectors is a fantastic experience to the spectators.
Sanghumughom : The Shanghumughom beach lies on the western part of Thiruvanantapuram city. The huge sculpture of a 'Nymph' made by the famous sculptor Kanai Kunjiraman, a star - shaped restaurant etc. are the special attractions of this place. The International Airport and a flying club are located nearby. Fishing is an attractive scane here.
Akkulam : Akkulam is situated 3 Km. away fron the city. Childrens park, boat club and boating facility in fibre glass boats through the backwaters are the peculiarities of this plae. The sculptures of Kanai Kunjiraman makes this place beautiful.
Veli :
This beach lies 1 km away from Shanmugham. A beautifull park, floating restaurant youth hotels etc. are the facilities here. Boating in fibre glass boat by seeing the natural beauty of this place is a fantasic experience.
Kuthiramalika : Situated near East Fort. This castle was used by King SWathi Thirunal to flourisj his artistic thoughts and ideas. The curvings and scuptures in this casle makes t beautiful.
Vizhinjam : Located 15 km. from the city. Cheras , the historical leaders used this place as thier harbour. A track temple made by drilling a huge rock attracts the tourists very much. There is also an aquarium , with a rich collection of sea animals.
Kovalam : situated in 13 km. away from Thiruvanathapuam. This beach attracts the tourists all over the world. Any body can take a seabath without fear.Several life-guards are appointed for the safety of the people. The Hawwa Beach where sun- bathing is a pleasure is nearby.
Sivagiri : Situated 3 Km. from Varkala Janardhana Swami Temple. This is the final resting place of Sree Narayana guru. Rare pictues of Guru and his belongngs aare kept here. This is a famous pilgrimage center also.
Aruvikkara : A beautiful place situates 16 km . away from Thiruvanathapuram. Karaman river is flowing throgh this place. The Head Quarters of Wllington Water Distribution Project is located here. A dam, a fish faorm and a Durga Temple are the attractions of this place.
Neyyar Dam ; Located 30 Km. from Thiruvanathapuram. A wild life sanctuary , a crocodile farm, a lion safari park etc. are the special features of this beauitfulll place. The facilty for boating in the reservior and a beatutiful garden are the other attaractions.
Koyikkal Palace : This palace is located at Nedumangad 18 km. from Thiruvancathapuram on the way of Ponmudi. In the 15 the centuary Umayamma Rani built this palace, shaped like a 'Nalukettu' and this is the one and only center for coin collection in Kerala.
Peppara : The beautifl forest area situated 50 Km. from Thiruvanathapuaram on the way Ponmudi. There ia s wild life sanctuary and a resorvior in this place.
Agasthyakoodam : A peak, 1890 meters above the sea level situated on the Sahya Mountains. 61 Km. away fron Thiruvananthapuram. 'Agusthyamuni' a famous saint in mythology, spent his days meditation at this place and hence the name. This is a suitble place for maountaineers.
Ponmudi : A tourisr centre 61 Km. away from Thiruvanathapuram, at a height of 610 metes above the sea level. THis place soroouned by the forrest and tea estates. The climates is a very pleasent , KTDC has arranges accomodation for the toursts here.
Tropical Botonical Graden and Research Institute : Located at Palode, a plce of the natural beaty , 35 Km. from Thiruvanathapuram. A vast collwction of rare plabts can be seen here.
Padmanabhapuram Palace : situated 53 Km. from Thiruvanathapuram on the wat to Kanyakumari. This palace was built bythe former Kings who ruled Trvacore. The atr and sculpture of this palace is very famouse.
